Our strategy is to invest in co-generation systems that capture and convert
into electrical power the waste heat and gases from the steelmaking operations
of our sister company, Lake Erie Works. We are also exploring the feasibility
of wind power farms, which could be situated on extensive land holdings owned
within the U. S. Steel Canada group in the Nanticoke region, one of the best
locations for wind power generation in Ontario.

Achieving our target of creating up to 100MW of electrical generating capacity
by 2010 will help drive reductions in greenhouse gas and other environmental
emissions at Lake Erie Works, reduce its reliance on the provincial electricity
grid, and improve its cost-competitiveness. As our energy business grows, Lake
Erie Energy will pursue new revenue opportunities to sell electrical capacity
into the provincial grid or potentially redirect it – via district energy
systems – to serve other industrial customers with facilities near our
generation facilities.
